In a world of publicly held corporations and boards of directors, it can seem as though the unique culture of family-owned operations is lost. However, there is still a handful of private, family-owned and operated businesses that focus on a culture built by their employees and customers. At J&M Tank Lines, Inc. we are proud to be one of the handful, as we celebrate our 75th Anniversary this year.
We would be remiss if we did not take this opportunity to reflect on the employees, customers and families that built the foundation on which we stand and contributed to J&M’s success over the last 75 years.
In 1948, J&M was founded by Jimmie McClinton, with a $125 loan he received from the People’s Bank in Selma, Alabama. He began this one-truck operation, alongside his wife Mildred, hauling mostly baled cotton and peanuts throughout south Alabama and Georgia.
Almost immediately, demand for McClinton’s trucking services increased leading to a partnership with Buck, Wingate and Bill Jackson in the early 1950s. Shortly after this partnership the need for a centralized location was apparent and the team settled on Americus, Georgia.

Throughout the 50s and 60s, J&M continued to prosper, expanding in truck size and commodity types through acquisitions of smaller companies such as H.B. Trucking Company, Har-Pen Trucking Company and more.
During this time, Harold Sumerford joined J&M as a bookkeeper/assistant manager overseeing cotton, salt, clay pipe, bulk cement and bag cement operations. The Jacksons then transitioned out of J&M, allowing for Sumerford and McClinton to continue J&M’s growth to operating over 500 trucks, flatbeds, vans and tanks: expanding into other areas of Georgia.

Following the death of McClinton in 1981, Sumerford took sole ownership of J&M, bringing Harold Sumerford, Jr. aboard as a regional salesperson in the Atlanta metro area. During this time, the company continued to grow heavily through continued acquisitions or start-ups of smaller companies such as Dump Trucking Company, Ragsdale Truck Line, Inc., Coldway Carriers, Inc., Fox Transport, Inc., Wilson Freight Lines and new food-grade and hazmat material divisions.
The merger of Coldway Carriers led to Peter Sumerford’s introduction to the company in 1989 as a dispatcher. A time in which J & M had 550 tractors, in addition to vans, liquid, refrigerated, flatbeds and pneumatic tanks as trailers.
Sumerford, Sr., Sumerford Jr. and P. Sumerford focused on building long-term relationships with their employees, vendors and customers. They also built a strong network of industry relationships through their involvement in National Tank Truck Carriers, Alabama Trucking Association, Georgia Motor Trucking Association, American Trucking Associations and many others. This network allowed for group alignment for local, state and federal legislation facing the trucking industry; legislations that can be contributed to increasing safety regulations, stabilizing the economy and aiding in the operations of trucking companies.

“I have been part of this company, officially, for 34 of its 75 years,” said Peter Sumerford, J&M’s President. “It has been an honor to be surrounded by so many great employees all these years and it has been a privilege to witness their professional growth and contribution to J & M’s accomplishments. I am in awe of their dedication and humbled by their choice to call J & M home.”
In the early 2000s, Sumerford Sr. began his retirement, passing leadership on to Sumerford, Jr. and P. Sumerford. During this time, the two brothers made a transition to specialize in tanks, specifically dry-bulk commodities, leaving 220 trucks and 300 tanks.
The pair expanded operations further into Alabama and Georgia with heavy food-grade accounts, as well as building-grade materials such as calcium carbonate, sand, lime and cement throughout existing and new locations in South Carolina and Texas.

In 2008, J&M transitioned its corporate office to Birmingham, Alabama, providing a destination location for employee growth and a centralized location amongst the terminal operations.
Today, J&M operates 450 tractors and 800 trailers at 11 terminal operations throughout Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas. Sister companies such as TransChem USA, Specialized Delivery Systems and Sumerford Logistics allow for a strong reach and quality service for customers and drivers.

J&M Tank Lines Brings Outdoor Adventures to Children with Life-Altering Illnesses
J&M Tank Lines partners with Kourageous Outdoor Kids, KOK, by donating land usage in Americus, GA for outdoor activities and hunt.
KOK is a non-profit founded in 2022 dedicated to serving children with life-altering illnesses. The volunteer lead organization is based out of Dublin-Laurens County, Georgia providing a variety of outdoor adventures such as: hunting, fishing, recreational sports, NASCAR events and more.
J&M Tank Lines owners, Harold and Peter Sumerford, provided land usage through their 1,000-acre hunting estate and event venue, Sumerford Farms, January 6 -7 for KOK to host children and their families.
During the two-day event, KOK and J&M Tank Lines provided all-inclusive experiences for three children, creating memories and fulfillment for all. They participated in a deer hunt where each of them were able to achieve a personal best.
“This weekend has been something special to us here at the farm and an unforgettable experience,” said Jonathan Warren, Hunting Guide at Sumerford Farms. “To be a part of something that’s bigger than us wasn’t just a rewarding experience, but a humbling one.”

J&M Tank Lines Welcomes New Executive Leadership Members
J&M Tank Lines, Inc. adds two new executives to its leadership team: Jeff Arledge serving as Vice President of Maintenance and Russell Curbo, CDS serving as Vice President of Safety.
Arledge came to J&M Tank Lines in 2021 as the Maintenance Director. He holds over 20 years of experience in fleet maintenance and management for bulk and food-grade carriers throughout the Southeast. He quickly made an impact across terminal and shop locations for J&M and its affiliated companies, seeking efficiency, unity and an emphasis on preventative maintenance.
“I am excited about the opportunity to lead J&M’s Maintenance team,” said Arledge. “I believe in hard work, teamwork and leading by example. Our team is focused on maintaining strong CSA scores and keeping our drivers equipped to perform at their best so they can deliver on our customer needs.”
Arledge believes in one team, working toward one goal. His leadership and dedication to doing things the right way before a problem can arise, made him the right choice to promote to J&M’s Vice President of Maintenance.
“We aim to be first-class in each segment of our company,” J&M CEO, Harold Sumerford said. “Selecting the right leadership is key to ensure we are ready to capitalize on opportunity; these gentlemen are dedicated to our industry and hold themselves to a higher standard. We are proud to have them as representatives of J&M and its people.”
Curbo recently joins J&M as Vice President of Safety with 30 years of transportation experience; 12 years with DOT and five years of Carrier Safety experience within the Southeast and Central United States. His mission is to provide an industry-leading safety culture that supports J&M’s values and growth strategies.
“I look forward to a challenge, which is why I have dedicated myself to this industry,” says Curbo. “J&M’s leadership, company culture and support for performing at a high level of safety, made this opportunity the right fit. I am eager to use my experience to benefit the overall welfare of J&M and its affiliates.”

Distracted Driving Awareness Month
April was Distracted Driving Awareness Month. This month is designed to help educated and remind drivers to stay alert and engaged with the road. Distractions can include texting, looking at your GPS, eating/ drinking, and so much more. Always remember that it can wait. We want you and everyone else on the road to make it home safe.
Safe Driving Summit
J&M Tank Lines, Inc. announced our official partnership with the Lutzie 43 Foundation to help end distracted driving and impaired driving.
As partners, J&M’s drivers will serve as safe driving ambassadors, through the example they set through the 43 Key Seconds initiative. This initiative serves as a checklist for all motorists before they begin operating a motor vehicle of any kind. Ensuring a clear head, clear hands, clear eyes and clicking your seatbelt.
Thursday, March 31st, J&M participated in a Safe Driving Summit with Lutzie 43 and the Georgia Department of Transportation to help bring awareness to local teens about safe driving.
White House Visit
We were honored to have our CEO, Harold Sumerford Jr., and one of our drivers and America’s Road Team Captain, Darrien Henderson, as part of the nine drivers and nearly two dozen CEO’s to attend the White House lawn for a ceremony with members of Congress and Administration officials on April 4th. Those in attendance were there to recognize ATA’s recent approval as a registered apprenticeship sponsor by the U.S. Department of Labor.
Social Media Tour
J&M’s Social Media Team took a tour of our Georgia terminals in April. They had the opportunity to spend time at each terminal. Learning from terminal employees and face-to-face interaction with drivers. Meeting with the many people of J&M allows for us to share the J&M Family with others through social platforms.

March Recap
March has been busy, but a memorable month for everyone at J&M. As we ramp up for the summertime, we took some time to acknowledge a group of great drivers, show some appreciation to our employees and give back to those in need.
Million Mile Awards
Friday, February 25th and March 4th, J&M held their 2019 – 2020 Alabama and Georgia Million Mile award dinners. These dinners were about honoring the career accomplishments J&M drivers who reached a million, or over a million safe miles. These drivers have been accident and violation-free for almost a decade. These drivers set the standard for the next generation of truck drivers, representing what it means to be a professional truck driver. J&M is proud to have safe, hardworking, and diligent drivers like these!
Trucking Cares
March 16, the trucking industry’s charitable arm – the Trucking Cares Foundation – announced it was donating more than $40,000 to a trio of organizations involved in Ukrainian humanitarian relief efforts. “The Trucking Cares Foundation was established to help mobilize the trucking industry in response to disasters – natural and manmade – so providing relief and comfort to Ukrainians suffering as a result of this war is something we are called to do,” said American Trucking Associations Chairman Harold Sumerford Jr., CEO of J&M Tank Lines. We are proud to contribute our part in making a difference!
Employee Appreciation Day
Employee Appreciation Day was March 4th this year. A couple of our locations took the opportunity to celebrate with Chick-fil-A biscuits or a terminal cookout. After two years of COVID restrictions, we were happy to gather together. J&M appreciates every single employee for all their hard work and dedication!
We are now looking forward to the busy season summer brings!
New Year, New Van
J&M is well-known in the industry for our signature orange trucks with chrome accents and a white stripe that runs from the side of the hood, across the door and to the back of the cab. In 2013 our orientation van, the “Mobile Training Unit”, was designed to replicate that of our trucks. A J&M orange van with a white stripe along both sides was branded to maximum capacity to prevent any confusion about who we are. When that orange van pulled up, you knew a group of elite drivers was pulling up with it.
That iconic orange van served J&M and an estimated 2,000 drivers, in their career as they joined the prestigious tank truck industry. If the walls of that van could talk, we suspect it would speak volumes to the knowledge its many passengers held, stories of “back in the day” as well as the ups and downs that come with trucking. Many will remember the van’s primary operator, Keith Wisener, who served J&M as a Professional Driver, Driver Trainer, Orientation Instructor and Director of Driver Training before his retirement in 2021.
After eight years of service to J&M, the orange van was laid to rest in 2021. While we will miss the unmistakable presence of this orange van, we will forever carry the many memories that were made with it.
2022, kicked off with a bang as we upgraded to a new orientation van to keep our new drivers riding comfortably and in style. This new van is branded with J&M’s circle logo and can seat 14 people comfortably. We have high hopes this new van can make just as many, if not more, memories as J&M continues to grow and bring on some of the industry’s finest drivers. While we may have a new van, we will maintain our reputation of the quality drivers it holds while in orientation.

America’s Road Team
January 18, the American Trucking Associations announced 22 professional truck drivers who will be 2022-2023 America’s Road Team Captains. This
is a group of professional truck drivers with superior safety records. They will speak at schools, attend industry events, or meet policymakers on behalf of the trucking industry. This year’s class includes drivers from 13 companies, 17 states, and drivers with more than 564 years of experience and 45,774,455 miles of accident-free driving. Among the group was J&M’s own, Darrien Henderson, out of Mobile, AL. It is a great honor for J&M to support Darrien as he travels the country in ATA’s Interstate One Image Truck. 2022 Managers Meeting
J&M was able to hold our annual Managers Meeting in-person after two years apart from COVID-19. It was great to see everyone after some very challenging years.
Friday night, employees were invited to Civil Axe, where new and existing employees were able to network and challenge each other in axe throwing.
Saturday, managers and office staff heard from our CEO and executive team in relation to the company’s goals for 2022, and our plans to reach them.
Lutzie 43 Partnership
Saturday during the managers meeting, the group heard from guest speaker Mike Lutzenkirchen of Lutzie 43 organization. J&M is patnering with Lutzie 43 to end distracted driving. We are looking forward to this partnership and all that 2022 will hold.

End of the Year Wrap Up
The end of the year has come and gone and we have been hard at work. The holiday season is often the slower time of year, however, we have not slowed down one bit.
Wreaths Across America
J&M has been involved with Wreaths Across America for several years, typically delivering wreaths to cemeteries throughout Florida. This year, however, J&M was given the opportunity to deliver, to Arlington National Cemetery. It is a great honor for J&M to do our part in sharing this mission and thanking our nation’s heroes for their service and sacrifice.
This year our driver was Nathan W. out of Sylacauga. Nathan is a marine who served from 1995-1999.

Extra Mile Award
A Quality Improvement Committee has been established to act as a sounding board for culture-based concerns that may arise and to promote our new company mission and values throughout J&M. This committee also launched a variety of programs and opportunities for all employees. The “Extra Mile” Award nomination form is available for all employees. This is where you can nominate each other to be recognized for displaying behavior or action that aligns with J&M’s Mission & Values, no matter the size of the gesture.
Darrien Named ATA Road Team Finalist
The American Trucking Association released the list of 36 professional drivers named as finalists for the 2022-2023 term of America’s Road Team. J&M’s own, Darrien Henderson, out of Mobile, AL, has been named a finalist. The chosen 2022-2023 America’s Road Team will be announced on January 19 following a ceremony on Capitol Hill in Washington. See the link below to view all of the finalists.

Fall Kick Off
This year started off busy and we have not slowed down one bit! The pandemic and the driver shortage has come with challenges, but J&M and the trucking industry continue to stay essential. Check out what we have been doing these last few months.
Birmingham Terminal Opening
Last month we opened a new terminal in Birmingham that is located off I65N behind the Flying J. This new facility is very nice! We will mainly haul cement, fly ash, and calcium carbonate out of this terminal. The terminal has three maintenance bays, office space, upgraded breaks areas and restrooms.
New Mission Statement and Values
On Friday October 15, 2021, our CEO, Harold Summerford JR., addressed the company with a new clear mission statement and core values. This is for a better work environment throughout J&M. While most of our employees already hold these values and characteristics, there is always room for improvement so we can continue to grow. You can see our new mission statement and values below.

Virtual Picnic 2021
This year’s Employee Appreciation Picnic was held virtually, again, because of COVID. Although we were unable to come together in person, we still hosted our traditional raffle for employees and their families and provided all employees with a $50 Visa gift card to spend with their families. You can see some of the winners here. Employees and their families were entered into a raffle, according to their terminal, to win some great prizes. Harold’s Chairmanship
Our CEO, Harold Sumerford Jr. was inducted as the 77th Chairman of the American Trucking Associations. During his year as Chairman, Harold will have the opportunity to influence and promote legislation focused on trucking, tort reform, infrastructure and more. He will travel the country representing and sharing everything the ATA and J&M stands for and strives to be. This is a great honor, and we are proud to share our great leader with the ATA and the industry as a whole.

Summer Kick-Start
Summer has officially started here at J&M Tank Lines and things are off to a great start! Summertime is often the busiest time of the year for tankers and J&M is following that trend after a year that has not let up!
J&M Launches New Pay Plan
June 1, 2021, J&M announced a new pay plan that would go into effect company-wide starting June 7, 2021. This new pay plan allowed for all terminals to be on the same pay plan, simplified the pay structure for employees to follow as well as a 5-10% increase in annual pay.
Specific updates include:
“We believe our professional drivers are some of the best in the industry,” said Harold
Sumerford, Jr, CEO at J&M Tank Lines. “These pay updates will continue to provide our drivers
with a comfortable income to support their families and accurately reflect the work they do.”
By moving all drivers to the same pay plan, the programs for all involved have been simplified and provide a clearer understanding to drivers about how their pay is calculate and the different factors that play a role.
Darrien NTTC PTTDY Finalist
In January 2020, the National Tank Truck Carriers announced J&M’s Darrien Henderson, as one of eight finalists in the Professional Tank Truck Driver of the Year award. Shortly after, the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, putting much of the world on hold, including the Driver of the Year ceremony.
After 18 months of waiting the NTTC was able to hold its annual conference in Indianapolis, along with the Professional Tank Truck Driver of the Year award ceremony. Henderson, along with seven other finalists stood on stage in front of tank truck leadership and professionals across the country to be recognized for their dedication, commitment and accomplishments within the industry.
The 2021-2022 NTTC Professional Tank Truck Driver of the Year Grand Champion was awarded to Ron Baird of Hoffman Transport. While Henderson was not selected as this year’s Grand Champion, J&M is extremely proud to have Henderson represent the company on a national level among so many incredible professional drivers. We would like to congratulate Baird on his award and to congratulate all other finalists, as to be nominated and selected as a finalist is a great honor in itself.

Trucks Are For Girls
This year J&M partnered with Women In Trucking to host local Girl Scout Troops at a unique and fun event centered around the trucking industry. The girls had the opportunity to learn more about the supply chain process their Girl Scout Cookies go through to get to them, starting with the raw materials.
We opened our event for up to 50 girls from troops in the Birmingham area. While in attendance, girls and their parents participated in four different stations that touched on different career opportunities within the industry.
Girls of all ages and their parents had the opportunity to ask questions about the industry and share some common misunderstood assumptions about what the Trucking Industry is and what is does for the world.
J&M’s group of volunteers represented all departments within J&M as well as the many different functions within those departments. Following the event, girls who attended received a custom Transportation Patch as well as a workbook to further their interest and deepen their knowledge.
Thank you to all organizations for your involvement to make this event happen and to the girls and parents who came out! We are looking forward to more events like this in the future.
Recruitment Success Story
It is rare to find potential employee and employer stories such as Robert P. and J&M these days. There is a high demand for professional drivers throughout the industry, if one company is not a fit or requirements do not match up, there are hundreds of other options for that driver to choose from. Usually, phone calls wrap up with “Please reach back out…” or “I’ll give you a call when…” and you never hear from them again. Not in this case. Robert knew he wanted to work for J&M and stayed in communication with his recruiter, Rachel, for several months to make that happen.
In October 2020, Robert first applied for J&M, but fell short to meet our experience requirement. He knew he wanted to be a part of the J&M family, so he took a position with a competitor to gain the necessary experience he was missing.
Jump forward to February 2021, Robert reached out to Rachel, but again fell short to meet our experience requirements. Some additional discussion about the position and encouragement to keep in contact helped Robert to stay confident in his choice to work for J&M.
Finally, in March 2021, Robert reached J&M’s experience requirement and Rachel was able to start processing his application. After long period of waiting, approval from our Safety department, completing orientation and training; Robert is now representing J&M in our famous orange trucks.
We are proud to have so many dedicated and loyal professional drivers here at J&M. Stories like this prove that building strong relationships and communicating well from the very beginning allows all of us to be successful! Robert, we are so glad to finally have you as part of the J&M Family and we look forward to a long relationship!
First Quarter Wrap-Up 2021
This year is off to a busy start for J&M, as more business opportunities arise and other industry challenges come to light. The pandemic has created challenges; however, the Trucking Industry is as essential as ever. Check out all things J&M and Industry related from Quarter 1.
Referral Contest
The need for quality drivers is as high as ever, so J&M reached out to our top recruitment source to help fill our needs. On top of our existing Referral Bonus Program, which pays up to $2,000 per hired referral, J&M opened a contest over 90 days for one lucky driver to receive the normal referral bonus pay-out as well as a J&M Die Cast Truck and $1,500 toward a vacation of their choosing.
The contest opened in December 2020 and closed in February 2021 with the winner announced via Facebook on February 16.
During this 90-day period, any J&M driver who referred another driver, who is hired, had their name placed into a drawing for the J&M Die Cast Truck and $1,500 toward the vacation of their choice. There was no limit to the number of referrals, thus the more referrals a J&M driver provided, the more chances they had to win!
On February 16, two of our Driver Recruiters named the Referral Contest Winner, Taryl T. of our Americus terminal. Taryl received the sought-after J&M Die Cast Truck and $1,500 toward a family vacation he plans to take this summer.

Wreaths Across America – Mobile Education Exhibit
J&M Tank Lines is honored to participate in Wreaths Across America since 2018 with a custom 53-foot trailer specific to the cause. Each year a J&M Driver is selected out of a group of volunteers to make the wreath deliver on behalf of J&M.
Following Wreaths Across America Day in December 2020, J&M had the pleasure to host the Wreaths Across America Mobile Education Exhibit in February 2021 at our Corporate Office in Birmingham, AL.
Each year Wreaths Across America Representatives Stefan and Jennifer, travel the country spreading word of their organization and its message to REMEMBER. HONOR. TEACH. They attend a variety of private, local, state and nationally held events year-round with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
Their visit provided J&M employees with the opportunity to learn more about the Wreaths Across America organization and thank those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for this country.

Drive Safe Act – Truck Driver Shortage & The Next Generation
America’s Truck Driver shortage has made national media coverage over the last few years, and we are now seeing the economic impact of what this means to civilians. A group of bipartisan legislators have introduced the DRIVE Safe Act to the U.S. House and Senate, which would expand industry opportunities for younger industry professionals.
Previously, 49 states allowed for individuals under the age of 21 to operate a Commercial Vehicle with a Commercial Driver’s License, Federal law limited these drivers to operate within state lines of which their license was provided.
The DRIVE Safe Act would allow CDL holders who are permitted to drive intrastate, to participate in an apprenticeship program, created to help master interstate driving while promoting increased safety training for the upcoming workforce.

Wreaths Across America 2020
2020 brought unprecedented challenges for people, companies and organizations across the world. Fortunately, Wreaths Across America was able to uphold its annual tradition of National Wreaths Across America Day on December 19, 2020 despite such challenges.
Every December, Wreaths Across America spreads its mission to Remember, Honor and Teach by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery and more that 2,100 other locations across the United States, at sea and abroad.
2020 was J&M’s third year to participate in Wreaths Across America by helping deliver wreaths to locations in Florida. A J&M Kenworth T680 and a custom wrapped trailer are used to pick up wreaths and deliver them to different locations the week of National Wreaths Across America Day.
This year, J&M Sylacauga Driver and Army Veteran, James Wimmer was selected to deliver the wreaths on J&M’s behalf.
Wimmer first traveled to Mississippi to pick up J&M’s portion of the wreaths and then back to Birmingham where he stopped by J&M’s corporate office.
Wimmer then departed on his travels to Florida where he made deliveries in Alachua, Bronson, Keystone Heights and Ocala.
“Participating in the Wreaths Across America program is one of the most gratifying aspects of what I do.” Said Andrew Petrofsky of J&M Tank Lines. “It allows us an opportunity to honor our veterans who are not only part of the J&M family, but all the veterans across the country. Having a J&M Veteran driver be part of the Honor Fleet each year is a great recognition for the sacrifices he made and is a testament to our country.”
This year is the second year a J&M veteran has delivered wreaths for Wreaths Across America on behalf of J&M. Each year J&M participates, it is hoped the deliveries will be made by a J&M veteran who has volunteered for the cause.
“I come from a military family,” said Wimmer. “This is simply another way I can serve my country and honor those in my family and those I served with. Thank you J&M for this opportunity.”

Mike Russell Trucking Image Award
The American Trucking Association presented J&M Tank Lines, Inc. with the Mike Russell Trucking Image Award, for a motor carrier, during this year’s virtual Management Conference & Exhibition on Oct. 26, 2020.
This award is given to one motor carrier, one state association and one professional driver who has gone above and beyond to improve the image of the trucking industry.
“Involvement in our industry’s associations is crucial whether it is at the local or national levels,” said Harold Sumerford, Jr. CEO of J&M Tank Lines. “This award is for all of the hard-working people at J&M Tank Lines and the efforts that go into treating each other how we would like to be treated.”
First awarded in 2007, the Mike Russell Trucking Image Award is given to an individual, motor carrier, trucking organization and industry supplier who each demonstrate excellence in illustrating the industry’s essentiality, professionalism, and commitment to safety on and off the highways. Since 2014, the award has been sponsored by HireRight.
“It is not enough to just simply exist in this industry, you have to be active in this industry,” said Peter Sumerford, President of J&M Tank Lines. “My father taught Harold and me at a young to give of our time and our resources, to give back to an industry that has been so good to us and to our people that have worked so hard for us.”
J&M Tank Lines is recognized for promoting the industry on social media and in the community, working to improve drivers’ morale while providing important health and safety information during the Pandemic.
“Technology and the rise of social media is an extremely powerful tool,” said Sabrina Williams, J&M Tank Lines’ Social Media Coordinator. “In an industry like ours where a company’s workforce is so wide-spread, social media provides a platform to connect employees to one another and the organization they work with. We take concrete steps to involve our entire workforce in our online culture and promote engagement through our various platforms.”
NTTC Competitive Safety Contest
We are proud to have won our mileage class for the for the National Tank Truck Carriers, NTTC, Competitive Safety Contest. This award is based on our safety record from 2019 for 31.5 – 40 Million Miles driven.
The attention to detail and safety-focused mindset that our professional drivers have, allows for J & M to receive recognition for programs such as this. Each safe mile that our drivers put in each day, accumulates toward our goal of getting every driver home safely.
Costume Contest
In the spirit of Halloween, J & M hosted a Costume Contest on Friday, Oct. 30 for all employees. Employees were allowed to dress in a work appropriate costume of their choosing for a chance to win one of three prizes. First place received a $50 VISA gift card, second place a $25 VISA gift card and third place a $10 Walmart gift card.
We had a great turn out of costumes. Those at J & M’s corporate office who chose not to participate were eligible to vote on the best costume. Votes were tallied and placings awarded based on the total amount of votes. A fun way to celebrate Halloween and bring some excitement to the office! Congratulations to our three winners!
2020 J&M Employee Appreciation Picnic
As far back as Harold and Peter Sumerford can remember, J&M has held its Employee Appreciation Picnic each year without fail. The picnic was started by Harold Sumerford, Sr. and carried on by Harold, Jr. and Peter after taking leadership of J&M Tank Lines.
This year’s COVID-19 outbreak posed a serious threat to a tradition looked forward to by so many employees and their family members. As September drew closer and COVID-19 was still hanging around, the decision was made to rethink the 2020 Employee Appreciation Picnic.
To better protect the health and safety of all J&M family members and their loved ones, a virtual picnic option was created. While the comradery would be greatly missed as well as the delicious food… a virtual event was deemed the best option without cancelling all together.
The Sumerfords distributed a letter to all employees thanking them for their dedicated service and explaining the current health risk our traditional picnic would impose. The letter also explained the outline for the virtual option, to help keep some sense of normalcy and tradition.
Traditional Picnic
Traditionally, the picnic takes place in mid-September, in tandem with National Truck Driver Appreciation Week. There are multiple picnics that take place across the different locations of J&M terminals and operations. All picnics take place on the same day, at the same times.
Employees and their families are invited to attend their location’s picnic, held on a Saturday, to enjoy home-cooked BBQ with all the fixings, comradery, multiple raffle drawings and several rounds of bingo.
A commemorative T-shirt is given out to all in attendance, in addition to the many prizes distributed to employees and their families. A health fair wellness check is also offered for all employees on J&M health insurance, with an additional raffle prize opportunity for those who participate.
Virtual Picnic
The virtual picnic was designed to keep as many traditional picnic events as possible. This included providing each employee with a $50 VISA gift card to use with their families, a raffle drawing of traditional prizes and an additional raffle to replace the health fair raffle.
Each picnic location was given a time slot on the original Saturday date, for their raffle drawing, employees were able to watch via Facebook, but were not required to watch in order to win. All employees’ names were placed into a bucket and guest drawers helped to select the winners of each prize.
Winners were contacted the following Monday, regarding details on how to receive their prizes. Employees also received their gift cards that week to put towards a family experience, since the company was not able to gather.
The additional raffle created an opportunity for employees to have some fun while also entering to win a 65” SONY TV. Employees had the opportunity to take a photo of them and their family out using the gift card given to them and send it in to J&M by Sept. 30. These photos were used as a raffle ticket entry to win a 65” SONY TV. Winners were announced on Oct. 1 via Facebook video.
Overall, the virtual employee appreciation was a success! Providing each employee with an opportunity to win a prize through the raffle as well as spend time with their family at their leisure on J&M. While we greatly missed spending time with our employees and their families, we are happy to keep some tradition alive.

End of Summer Wrap-Up
July and August have sent encouraging vibes throughout J&M Tank Lines as the summer season begins to wind down. While COVID-19 is still present across the country, proper PPE has shown its effectiveness in protecting against the virus and helping to keep our J&M family healthy. As companies continue to open back up, freight opportunities are also increasing – giving companies like J&M potential for additional growth. Catch a summer re-cap of everything J&M below.

The American Trucking Association (ATA) selected 10 drivers to attend the Salute to America at the White House in Washington D.C. on the 4th of July. J&M’s Darrien Henderson from Mobile, AL was one of those invited. Henderson and his wife traveled to D.C. for the festivities and were featured in Bulk Transport’s Article.
Vice President of Safety and Compliance, Dave Edmondson, was invited to be part of this year’s FMCSA Virtual Trucking Safety Summit. Edmondson, along with several other industry professionals, spoke on challenges facing the industry and some ways to overcome such challenges.

We are happy to welcome Chris Bryan as our new Business Development Manager. Bryan has over 14 years of experience in the tank truck industry and experience in both the shipper and carrier side of the industry. We look forward to the strengthening of current customer relations and the building of new ones as we keep J&M moving forward.

This year’s pandemic has forced several companies and organizations to change, cancel or post-pone events that are usually held in-person. J&M’s Managers Meeting was no different. What typically is a two-day in-person event filled with travel for terminal and shop managers, terminal overviews, evaluations, team bonding and state of the company discussions – turned into a virtual version.
With the use of Microsoft Teams, video conference calls were possible to provide some face-to-face interactions, while complying with social distancing. The comradery portions were greatly missed, however other opportunities for more in-depth reporting and reviews were made possible.
Adjusting to a new normal is never simple and certainly has its challenges. The J&M family has shown is flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes as they come. No one knows what the future holds, but we are confident in the abilities of our employees and the services we provide to keep J&M and our industry moving forward.
States Are Opening, What Does That Mean for Drivers?
Many of our nation’s professional drivers have seen an extreme slowdown in freight, a shut down in some cases, as a result from the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic. Other drivers have been fortunate to maintain consistent loads and steady pay while making adjustments to their day to day operations.
For company drivers, such as J & M’s, these adjustments consist of daily self-certification forms, masks, daily sanitation, virtual safety meetings, social distancing and more. A silver lining for drivers during this pandemic has been the extreme decrease in traffic and other motorists during both interstate and intrastate travel.
Professional drivers and other essential personnel have had the roadways to themselves over the last few months, but as each state begins to lift Stay Home orders, more challenges are coming.
Everyone is adjusting to what the new normal will be including public outings, travel, shopping and recreational activities. Many states still require citizens to wear masks and maintain social distancing while in public, but what does this mean for the professional driver?
Drivers have an advantage on those who have been under the Stay Home order. That advantage being they have already adapted to new safety and health protocols put in place by local, state and national government agencies.
However, a disadvantage comes into place as drivers will need to adjust again to the increase of motorists throughout the nation. This adjustment also applies to non-professional drivers as well.
All motorists should be aware that they are not the only ones traveling, recognizing that some may not have driven or traveled for weeks. The time has come to remind yourself of some standard driving safety tips and laws, whether you are operating a commercial or personal vehicle.

J & M Tank Lines continues to prosper and grow each year through forward-thinking leadership and the hard work of each employee, at every level. 2019 was a year of next-level planning and business opportunities, which included plans of a new corporate office.
Summer and fall 2019 brought ownership of the previous Valley National Bank corporate office along Highway 280 in Birmingham. While just a short move across the street from the existing office, this new building brings long-term goals and future growth opportunities into place.
Now headquartered at 1100 Corporate Parkway, J & M Tank Lines maximizes on new technology opportunities to streamline day-to-day operations and advance within the industry ranks. A new layout among departments allows for quicker operations and more open communications.
While adjustments are made and new workflow processes are implemented, J & M Tank Lines has its sights on maintaining its status as an industry leader and continuing to help move trucking forward.

Valley National Bank will continue to host a branch on the 1st floor entrance and drive thru, however the other three floors will be home to J & M Tank Lines.
Upon entering the building through the lakeside entrance, you will find the Driver Orientation/Training Room, Safety, Human Resources and Recruiting Departments.
A trip to the 2nd floor, hosts the Operations and Accounting Departments.
Finally, a trip to the 3rd floor, hosts the Leadership Team and Boardroom.
New department layouts allow for more team collaboration and accessibility. Each department is provided with equipment and technology to simplify daily tasks and maximize the time and resources of each employee.
The implementation of these technology features will assist with J & M Tank Lines’ existing paperless efforts as well as provide timely responses to the needs of employees’ company-wide and next-level service to our customers.

J & M Tank Lines Takes On COVID-19
As our country adapts to the world-wide epidemic that is the coronavirus (COVID-19), so do the many industries that support the United States economy. Each day is filled with new statistics, new local and federal orders, new medical advice and a new normal.
Those in the trucking industry have always recognized this industry to be the backbone of our country and now the rest of the country is realizing it too. The mass hysteria that occurs in grocery stores as citizens rush to stockpile as many cleaning supplies, toilet paper and canned goods as possible, has everyone looking for the Professional Truck Drivers to deliver the next shipment.
While J & M Tank Lines focuses primarily on the dry-bulk, B2B portion of the trucking industry, we are honored to serve and support our nation and its people. While business is not what we consider to be “normal” we are striving each day to adapt to the changing epidemic to keep our employees, customers and their families safe, while still delivering freight. Here are a few policies and procedures we have implemented to help make this happen.
A Letter to Our Customers & Our Employees
Maintaining open communication with our customers and employees is crucial to ensure the needs of all parties are being met. Each customer has their own version of health and sanitation policies that our drivers must be compliant with. However, compliance at the customer is simply not enough.
In order to help stop the spread of the virus, all J&M employees, not just our professional drivers, are to adhere to any new or changing health and sanitation policies set by J&M in compliance with the CDC and state and federal governments. From the moment an employee arrives to work, to the moment an employee departs, there are steps put into place to help keep them safe from the spread of COVID-19.
All customers and employees of J & M are greatly encouraged to reach out with any additional questions or concerns regarding new or any changes in policy. In times such as these, one cannot over communicate.

It can be difficult to defend yourself and others from a virus that you are either not aware of or do not know much about. For this reason, flyers explaining what the coronavirus (COVID-19) is, how to protect yourself and your family, as well as hygiene and travel tips are placed around our terminals, offices and driver mailboxes.

2020 Kicks-Off Strong at J & M Tank Lines
The first quarter of 2020 has been a busy one at J & M Tank Lines. While most companies are showing a slow-down in operations, we remain steady with more growth on the horizon. These first few months have allowed J & M to recognize the newest inductees to the J & M Million Mile Club, for those drivers who hit one million safe miles in 2018, and a company-wide Managers Meeting, allowing for terminal and shop managers to meet with corporate personnel to discuss current operations and team-building.

In 2018, 11 of J & M’s Professional Drivers reached one million safe miles driven, which takes roughly nine years to accomplish pending no accidents or violations occur in that time. One driver was recognized for reaching two million safe miles driven, serving J & M for roughly 17 years. A formal dinner was hosted in Birmingham, Al for those from Alabama and another in Atlanta, Ga for those from Georgia. This dinner allowed million milers and their wives to be recognized for their achievements by J & M’s executive management and leadership.

Managers Meeting
The end of February brought a combined teambuilding and training session for all J & M corporate staff as well as terminal and shop managers. Over two days, terminal personnel, corporate personnel and executive management met to discuss each terminal’s needs and growth opportunities as well as an overview of J & M’s expectations for 2020.
This meeting provided these employees the opportunity to interact with those they rarely see face to face. These interpersonal relationships are crucial to the functions of J&M and provide time to find solutions and spark new ideas in a positive team environment.
J & M Tank Lines is blessed with a strong group of driven employees, that are working to help move the trucking industry forward. Our elite force of drivers, paired with motivated management and support staff, allows J & M Tank Lines to remain an industry leader.

J & M Tank Lines Accepted for FMCSA Under 21 Military CDL Pilot Program
New programs are developing in the trucking industry to test the abilities of drivers under the age of 21, in hope of opening a new market of professional truck drivers. It is currently legal for drivers as young as 18 years old to hold a CDL and travel intrastate, however they are not able to cross state lines or transport materials originated from another state.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has launched an Under 21 Military CDL Pilot Program in order to test whether drivers under 21 years of age are as safe as those over 21 years of age. This study has the potential to open laws and regulations to allow professional truck drivers under the age of 21, to travel interstate with commodities from various origins.
This pilot program will hold two driver groups:
While drivers will age out of the pilot program upon turning 21 years old, carriers may continue to employ these drivers.
J & M Tank Lines is one of 23 motor carriers accepted into this pilot program and one of few which specializes in Dry-Bulk commodities with operations in the Southeastern United States.

The FMCSA states that drivers must meet all requirements, except for age, for operating a CMV in interstate commerce. Drivers are not allowed to transport passengers or hazardous materials, nor operate special configuration vehicles; such as double or triple trailer combination or cargo tank vehicles.
Carrier members are required to provide monthly data submissions for each study or control group driver in addition to immediate reporting for accidents, convictions, alcohol or drug related incidents, leaving the company or leaving the pilot program.

J & M Tank Lines’ Darrien Henderson Named NTTC Professional Tank Truck Driver of the Year Finalist
The excitement and joy that spread across J & M Tank Lines’ Professional Driver, Darrien Henderson’s face told J & M Tank Lines’ CEO, Harold Sumerford, Jr. all he needed, to confirm he made the right choice by nominating Henderson for the NTTC Professional Tank Truck Driver of the Year award.
Sumerford informed Henderson he is one of the eight finalists for the National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) 2019-2020 Professional Tank Truck Driver of the Year (PTTDY) award, shortly after its public release. Henderson immediately jumped for joy and could not believe it… he is going to Washington D.C. to stand with some the industries best professional drivers, himself included. Of these top eight finalists, one will be named the Grand Champion and awarded the William A. Usher, Sr. Trophy.
August 2019, the NTTC opened its application for the 2019-2020 PTTDY award. It takes a special kind of professional driver to qualify for this award and Sumerford wanted to be sure to nominate one of his drivers for this opportunity.
“It takes an elite driver to make it in the tank world,” said Sumerford. “I believe J & M has the best drivers in the industry and I want to make sure they are recognized for it through programs like the NTTC Professional Tank Truck Driver of the Year award.”
About the NTTC PTTDY Award
The NTTC created the Professional Tank Truck Driver of the Year award to recognize, pay tribute and promote professional tank truck drivers who provide reliable and safe transportation of all dry-bulk and liquid commodities.
The NTTC Safety Committee selects a driver based on his/her ability to operate safely and professionally, demonstrate leadership abilities within his/her company and the candidate’s contributions to the industry and community.
To be eligible for this award, a professional driver must be employed full-time with an NTTC carrier member or fleet associate member for three consecutive years. All applications are reviewed for their accuracy by the NTTC as well as signed by the member company’s CEO, Director of Safety and applicant.
Any NTTC carrier member or fleet associate member is eligible to nominate up to 2 candidates for review. The application consists of questions about the candidate regarding his/her personal and professional experiences, a written statement from the applicant and three letters of recommendation; one from the company and two non-company related. A copy of the applicant’s MVR is also mandatory to ensure a clean and safe driving history.
Of the submitted applicants, eight driver champion finalists are selected, and one grand champion driver is selected from these finalists as the NTTC Driver of the Year Award recipient.
The grand champion receives a tank truck trophy, an honorary jacket, a commemorative ring and two golf shirts. Also, the NTTC will make a $2,500 donation to a safety-related organization in the grand champion’s name.

Upon deciding J & M Tank Lines would submit a candidate for this year’s competition; Sumerford paired with J & M’s Vice President of Safety and Compliance, Dave Edmondson, Jr. to find the right candidate.
Not only did the candidate need to meet the technical qualifications set by the NTTC, but J & M wanted to take it a step further to find a candidate that would represent not only the company, but also someone who sets the example for professional drivers everywhere.
After weeks of an internal review, Henderson was one of five J & M drivers being considered. Following several phone-call interviews, Henderson was excited and eager to be the one to represent J & M Tank Lines on what could turn into a national scale.
“Darrien has earned the right and the privilege to stand among the best tank truck drivers in the country through his desire to be the best, his dedication to safety and his professional character,” said J & M Tank Lines’ President, Peter Sumerford. “He represents himself and our company with the kind of integrity and respect that can be rare to come by.”
Henderson and Edmondson will attend the PTTDY Finalist Interview portion in Washington D.C. on February 17 – 18. Following those interviews, Henderson will be invited back to D.C., with Sumerford and Edmondson to attend the NTTC Annual Conference May 3 -5 where the grand champion will be announced.
“I am just so honored that J & M recognizes the hard work I have put into my job,” said Henderson. “I have been with J & M for almost 10 years and a professional driver for 23. Opportunities like this don’t come often. I am so blessed to be considered for this award.”

J&M Military Veteran Delivers Wreaths for Wreaths Across America
In 2018, J & M Tank Lines was honored to participate in Wreaths Across America, where a J & M 2018 Kenworth T680 sleeper cab and a new dry van with special wrapping, were dedicated to the cause. Vice President of Maintenance, Billy Lollar, volunteered to drive and deliver the wreaths assigned to J & M. Lollar worked with Andrew Petrofsky to map out routes and deliveries throughout Florida. Over a 7-day period, Lollar was dispatched by Petrofsky to each stop and cemetery location, delivering wreaths for our fallen heroes.
“The impact of it was surreal. How appreciative everyone was at each delivery and receiving the wreaths was heartwarming to see,” said Lollar. “I wasn’t prepared for the personal impact it would have on me, seeing how big of a role J & M was making in honoring these heroes.”
After such success and appreciation from both parties last year, J & M Tank Lines decided to participate again in 2019. Petrofsky led this year’s participation by opening an opportunity for one of J & M’s military-veteran drivers to make the trip. Veteran drivers had the opportunity to show their interest in the program by submitting an application through their terminal managers.
“The Wreaths Across America program is an incredible way for J & M to not only give back to our community, but also honor the veterans that are part of our J & M family,” said Petrofsky. “We look forward to many more years of participating.”
Following an interview process; military-veteran and driver, John Howard, was selected to represent J & M Tank Lines. Howard served in the United States Marine Corps from 1982 to 1986 with the Golf Company, weapons platoon 2/8, 22 Marine Amphibious Unit in Grenada and Beirut, Lebanon. He bravely served his country as a part of the ‘83 Strike on Lebanon where his unit came under heavy fire from Syrian-held territory ending in the death of eight Marines and the injury of two others.
“It was a wonderful experience and I am honored that J & M chose me to represent our company by delivering these wreaths,” said Howard. “Every tombstone has a story to tell and I was proud to share some of my service and honor my fallen brethren.”
Howard was assigned 9 locations in Florida to deliver wreaths. He began his trip in Georgia and went to Mississippi to load the wreaths. Howard then started in North Florida, making his way south over a 7-day period, before returning to Georgia following his last stop on December 14.
“I have great pride in the ability to provide this service for those who have lost their lives defending our freedom,” said J & M Tank Lines CEO, Harold Sumerford, Jr. “Wreaths Across America provides us with a way to thank and remember our service men and women for generations to come.”

YOUR FIRST YEAR AS A TRUCK DRIVER IS NOT GOING TO BE EASY
There are a lot of things you will have to learn during your first year, and many drivers remember their first year as the most challenging part of their truck driving careers. Your first year will test you, but experienced drivers encourage first-year truckers to push through. It gets better! Driving a truck is like any other job; you have to pay your dues and gain experience to get where you want to be.
YOU HAVE TO COMPLETE CDL TRAINING FIRST
ou will start your first year with CDL courses and training. CDL training can take a couple of months to complete, and a lot of your time will be spent taking tests and spending time over the road with a driving trainer.
One thing a lot of truck drivers remember about their training is the awkwardness of spending so much time with a complete stranger in such a tight space. Some truck drivers remember liking their driving trainer, but some did not get along at all. Either way, truck drivers remember this experience as a rite of passage toward going solo.
Another thing drivers who have been through CDL training remember is that it doesn’t pay very well at first. You want to make sure that you have a financial plan in place as you get through this part of your first year.
The CDL training experience is very intense, but once you have completed it, you will have the knowledge you need to tackle your first year over the road. You may not make a lot of money your first year as you gain experience, but in the trucking business, more experience means more money.
YOU WILL HAVE TO ADJUST TO A LOT OF LIFESTYLE CHANGES
Most truckers spend their first year over the road for weeks on end. This is another trial a driver must endure to gain the experience they need to become a safe and reliable trucker. You can expect to encounter physical and psychological changes as you adjust to this new lifestyle.
Being out on the road for weeks at a time is a difficult adjustment, especially if you are in a relationship or have a family. It is crucial that you discuss how you are going to deal with the distance between you and your loved ones. Drivers who have made it through the first year suggest that you get a good cell phone plan so that you can keep in touch with friends and family as much as possible. A quick FaceTime with a friend will do a lot to help alleviate the loneliness of traveling by yourself for a long time.
You also get minimal downtime in your first year. You will probably struggle to adjust to erratic sleep patterns. Sometimes you will be able to get a good night’s sleep, but other times you will have to plan naps strategically throughout your day. It is crucial that you plan a daily schedule with rests and work breaks.
These lifestyle changes require a bit of adjustment, but eventually, you will get better at planning your daily sleep schedule, and you will find ways to keep in touch with friends and family.
YOU WILL LEARN TO MAKE SAFE DRIVING A PRIORITY
Many first-year drivers are prone to accidents out on the road. You need to do everything you can to avoid them because an accident will result in a stain on your DAC report and your CVOR. Experienced truckers advise that you focus on safe driving instead of worrying about logging the most miles in your first year. A clear driving record is the most important thing to a truck driver because it means better loads and better pay as you progress in your career.
During your first year, you still have a long way to go to prove yourself as a reliable truck driver, which results in lower pay and undesirable loads, unfavorable locations, and tight delivery/pickup schedules. Just keep in mind that as long as you continue to keep a clean driving record and show yourself to be someone to count on, you will eventually get the kind of loads you want to the places you want to go.
YOU WILL COME TO EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
According to experienced truck drivers, you learn to look for a silver lining in all things when you are out on the road. Don’t sweat the small stuff. In other words, don’t let yourself blow your top when someone cuts you off. The unexpected is going to happen when you are out for long periods during your first year: DOT checks, breakdowns, traffic jams, and bad weather. Just keep in mind that everything that happens to you is a learning experience, and the more you advance, the more you will be prepared for in the future.
YOU WILL REALIZE THAT YOU ARE NEVER REALLY ALONE
Many first-year drivers aren’t prepared for how much their every move is monitored. Someone is always watching you. The Department of Transportation and law enforcement will be keeping an eye on you while you are on the road, and your employer will probably be keeping track of your speed, RPM, location, idle time, and sleep time. You are under a great deal of scrutiny, but you get used to it, and you may even come to appreciate that you aren’t entirely alone out there.
YOU WILL DISCOVER THAT IT GETS BETTER!
Everything gets easier after the first year. You will have a better understanding of how your truck works, how to navigate tricky areas, and you will have adjusted to the lifestyle. Just keep in mind that after you get through the trials and tribulations of the first year, you will find yourself in a very profitable career.
